End Stage Renal Disease
End stage renal disease (ESRD) is when the kidneys have become damaged over a long period of time and can no longer function on their own. ESRD, also called end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure, affects individuals with severe long-term kidney damage caused by chronic illnesses like uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure
Symptoms include fatigue and weakness, nausea and vomiting, swelling of feet and ankles, shortness of breath and difficulty sleeping. Without the kidneys’ ability to remove natural waste products and extra water from the body, patients with ESRD must receive dialysis or kidney transplantation to survive.
Long-term dialysis often causes patients to be protein malnourished, triggering debilitating effects such as muscle and weight loss, hormonal imbalances and weakening of the immune system. To address these effects, clinical nutrition is essential, ensuring patients receive the nutrients they need through a combination of a special diet, medications and regular monitoring by healthcare professionals.
Pentec Health knows that even individuals who follow a dialysis diet very carefully may still experience challenges getting vital nutrition through food and dietary supplements alone. Our deep understanding of the nutritional needs of dialysis patients and our experience providing unique, personalized therapies help address the impact of long-term dialysis treatment and enhance quality of life.
