Tyrosinemia Type 1
Tyrosinemia Type 1 (TYR) is a rare inherited disorder affecting the body's ability to break down the amino acid tyrosine, potentially leading to severe liver disease and problems with the kidneys and central nervous system. TYR is a lifelong condition with no cure, typically affecting infants and young children.
Symptoms may appear within the first month of life and can vary between individuals. They can include a failure to thrive (problems gaining weight and growing), jaundice (yellowing of the eyes) and an abnormally large liver. The disorder can be diagnosed through clinical evaluation, including a detailed patient history, specialized tests and newborn screening programs.
Lifelong treatment involves maintaining a special low-tyrosine diet, taking special medical foods to ensure adequate essential protein intake, medication as well as routine liver and kidney function testing.
ZOIA Pharma, a Pentec company – the only medical food provider in the U.S. exclusively focused on supporting the rare disease community, including individuals living with TYR – understands that the more appropriate nutrition options are available to people with inherited metabolic disorders, the more opportunities they have to stay healthy. That’s why we supply a broad range of specialized nutrition products and nutritional management services to empower patients and their families on the journey toward better health and well-being.
