Phenylketonuria
Newborn screening identifies almost all cases of phenylketonuria, or PKU, a rare inherited disorder that causes harmful build-up of an amino acid called phenylalanine in a person’s blood or urine. This lifelong condition has no cure but starting treatment early can prevent disability, brain damage and other major health problems.
While newborns with PKU don’t typically show initial symptoms, without treatment babies will usually develop symptoms within a few months, including seizures, skin rashes, musty order in the breath, skin or urine, developmental delays and behavioral issues.
For the rest of their lives, people with PKU — babies, children and adults — need to follow a diet that limits phenylalanine, which is found mostly in foods that contain protein. Lifelong treatment also involves taking special medical foods to ensure adequate essential protein intake. Medications may also be needed for certain patients.
ZOIA Pharma, a Pentec company – the only medical food provider in the U.S. exclusively focused on supporting the rare disease community, including individuals living with PKU – understands that the more appropriate nutrition options are available to people with inherited metabolic disorders, the more opportunities they have to stay healthy. That’s why we supply a broad range of specialized nutrition products and nutritional management services to empower patients and their families on the journey toward better health and well-being.
Our dedication to families living with PKU extends beyond our high-quality service and support. We are pleased to also support the rare disease community through a partnership with the National PKU Alliance (NPKUA), which is founded on improving the lives of people living with PKU and pursuing a cure. Our partnership helps NPKUA provide resources to the community including research funding, education and support, emergency assistance programs, community connections and more.
