Homocystinuria
Homocystinuria (HCU) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the body’s ability to process the amino acid methionine, leading to a harmful buildup of homocysteine in a person’s blood or urine. It is a lifelong condition with no cure but recognizing HCU and starting treatment early can help individuals lead healthy, active lives.
This disorder primarily affects children and can cause symptoms like developmental delays, joint and bone problems, vision issues and an increased risk for blood clots or stroke. Every baby born in U.S. hospitals is screened for this condition shortly after birth. It’s important to note that babies with HCU don’t usually exhibit symptoms before turning one, but symptoms can develop later in life without early treatment.
Lifelong treatment includes adhering to a special diet low in methionine, taking special medical foods to ensure adequate essential protein intake, vitamin supplements (like B6), and sometimes medication.
ZOIA Pharma, a Pentec company – the only medical food provider in the U.S. exclusively focused on supporting the rare disease community, including individuals living with HCU – understands that the more appropriate nutrition options are available to people with inherited metabolic disorders, the more opportunities they have to stay healthy. That’s why we supply a broad range of specialized nutrition products and nutritional management services to empower patients and their families on the journey toward better health and well-being.
Our dedication to families living with HCU does not stop there. We are proud to further support the rare disease community through our partnership with the HCU Network America, which helps patients and their families affected by classical Homocystinuria (HCU), severe Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and cobalamin deficiencies C-X (Cbl) through resources, community connections, advocacy and support.
