NPKUA Break Free of Phe Scientific Conference Poster Session
Pentec Health is pleased to participate in the poster session for NPKUA’s Break Free of Phe Scientific Conference, February 9th, 2024. The abstract focuses on the patient experience with novel medical food, PKU GOLIKE® and its impact on reported fullness. As part of Pentec’s recent acquisition of ZOIA Pharma, we are the exclusive distributor of this first of its kind prolonged-release phe-free product designed to simulate natural proteins and address common patient complaints associated with medical foods including gastrointestinal (GI) issues, unpleasant flavor, aftertaste and bad breath.
A restrictive diet is the first line of defense for PKU patients in order to maintain acceptable Phe levels. This involves severely limiting the amount of natural proteins consumed, which can lead to numerous challenges. One of which is experiencing hunger throughout the day that often results in snacking on foods that may or may not be high in Phe. As a result, patients may overconsume foods (either natural or medical) to stave off the feeling of hunger.
Traditional medical formulas routinely consumed by PKU patients consist of free amino acids that do not mimic natural protein digestion and may contain high amounts of sugar. In recent years, developments within the market have brought alternative options, which more closely resemble natural protein digestion and may help patients feel fuller for longer. For example, glycomacropeptide (GMP) products have been clinically shown to reduce Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, and improve Phe utilization throughout the day. Similarly, PKU GOLIKE uses a physiomimic technology coating that resembles a natural food protein structure. This allows for the slow release of amino acids, which in turn could improve a patient’s ability to feel fuller.
Between May 2023 and January 2024, 88 patients (or their caregivers) provided a response related to their experience with PKU GOLIKE and its impacts on satiety. Of these respondents, 82% (n=72) reported feeling fuller for longer when consuming this groundbreaking medical food as compared to other formulas they have used in the past.
Talk to your healthcare provider about getting started on PKU GOLIKE or other medical food options that Pentec Health and ZOIA Pharma offer the PKU community enabling patients to adhere to a strict diet every month while improving clinical outcomes. For more information, visit PentecHealth.com.
