Short Bowel Syndrome

Short Bowel Syndrome

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare medical disorder that occurs when part of the small intestine is missing or damaged, leading to poor absorption of nutrients such as fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and more. SBS can result from surgery to remove part of the small intestine due to Crohn’s disease, cancer or blood clots, or portions of the intestine can be missing or damaged at birth.
