Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD) – or sickle cell anemia – is a group of genetic blood disorders in which abnormal hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen throughout the body, causes red blood cells to become misshapen and look like a sickle or crescent moon. These misshapen red blood cells can block blood flow and reduce the delivery of oxygen throughout the body, potentially causing pain and other complications.
There are several types of SCD, some more severe than others. Almost 94% of people in the U.S. with SCD are Black, but it also can affect people of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Indian ancestry. Symptoms include anemia, pain, fatigue, swelling in the hands and feet, delayed growth, vision problems and frequent infections. Over time, SCD can lead to a variety of severe complications such as organ damage, blindness or stroke.
The disease is typically uncovered during routine newborn testing in U.S. hospitals. Treatment focuses on pain management, treating symptoms and preventing complications, and may include pain medications, blood transfusions, stem cell transplants, vaccines and gene therapy. Routine medical treatment and preventative measures, including adequate fluid intake, are important for patients with SCD.
Pentec Health knows that good nutritional support is critical to promote health for vulnerable patients and prevent complications from SCD.
