Protein Energy Wasting and Nutrition Interventions

Presenter: Annette Adams MDA, RDN, CSR, LD/N- Clinical Nutrition Education & Outcomes Specialist, Pentec Health

Protein-energy wasting (PEW) remains a challenge in managing patients with chronic kidney disease, with impacts on survival, function, and quality of life. In this updated presentation, we’ll explore the latest insights into risk factors and clinical consequences—including inflammation, sarcopenia, and frailty—and why early recognition matters. You’ll gain practical strategies for identifying and monitoring PEW in clinical practice, along with an in-depth look at nutrition interventions such as oral nutrition supplements (ONS), tube feeding, intradialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN), and intraperitoneal nutrition (IPN). We’ll also review the most recent evidence on clinical outcomes to help guide personalized care and improve patient results.
